Alabama's Next Top Model......

Earlier in the week, I got a call from my realtor telling me that a local fashion photographer had seen the real estate listing pictures of our house and inquired about doing a photo shoot at our pool for a local magazine.   Seeing as America's Next Top Model has always been one of my favorite shows, I was all like, "Well hell yes, if I can watch and take pictures of them taking pictures!"

It's for the April issue which doesn't come out for a few weeks so I can't show you actual pictures of the model yet, but I can tell you that she was young and gorgeous and thin and had no body fat or jiggles anywhere and the most stunning eyes ever.  I totally hated her for a few hours.

Not really.  I actually was extremely impressed with her.  She had to get in the pool for most of the shots.  While it was in the mid 80's today, it's still just mid March and hasn't been all that warm recently and Mr. Cheapskates Hubs and I have not turned on the pool heater yet.  Let's just say there's no way I would have ever gotten in that water and she never complained ONCE.  Total rock star.

That's the photographer and the owner of the boutique who's clothes the shoot was featuring.  I'll tell you more about her when the issue comes out, but in my skinnier days I bought a bunch of stuff from her shop and my niece actually worked there for a short amount of time.

The blonde is the make-up artist and oh my was she good.  It was so much fun to watch all the primping between shots.  I really want my own make-up, hair and stylist people to walk around with me and primp me all day.  It would really help matters.

It takes the efforts of a lot of people to make a pretty picture!

I'd like to thank the entire crew for being so much fun to have at my pool for the afternoon.  Y'all were professional, interesting, generous with your knowledge and just plain fun.   I can't wait to show you pictures of the beautiful model!!

Exclusive Resorts - Las Vegas - Vdara

We're in Vegas, baby!

There's only one place with this kind of excess.......and it's soooo much fun!!

When we landed in Vegas Thursday evening, the stewardess said, "Welcome to Lost Wages!"  True dat.  I've lost some of hubs' wages since I've been here.  I started out fine....down 20, up 70....then it turned ugly.....down 100, down 100.....I hope he doesn't read this!!

We're staying at ER's new residences in the Vdara and they couldn't be nicer.  The Vdara is part of the new City Center complex located directly next to the Bellagio.  It's a non-gaming (RARE in VEGAS), non-smoking (RARER yet!) residence-only tower.  We're staying in ER's unit 47026 and the views are spectacular.

As I said, the Bellagio is next door and we have a perfect seat for their water show.

We can see all the way up the Strip to Trump and Encore at the Wynn and the beautiful mountain range surrounding the city.

You also get beautiful morning views of Sunrise Mountain....and the Cosmopolitan Hotel!

They units are two bedrooms (both kings) with an adequate kitchen/dining/living room area full of natural light.  Again....check out that view!

They have a sleek, modern decor but I have to say that the only really comfortable piece of furniture is the couch.  See those two matching chairs?

Awful.  Sure they look good, but they might as well have put a concrete bench there.  It's almost a competition to get to the living room first so you don't have to sit in either one of those chairs.

Master bedroom...

Second bedroom....

I know a lot of members don't see the value in having units in Vegas, but we're really enjoying ourselves and if ER's going to have residences here, I think these are a perfect choice.  When you walk into Vdara, you immediately get a calming feeling that you've somehow escaped the noise and excess associated with Vegas, but you're literally a few minutes walk if you want to go back.  The new Aria casino is 50 yards out the front door and is loaded with some fabulous restaurants and the Bellagio is a five minute walk via a covered walkway.

Other than those chairs, I only have one minor issues with the Vdara....the Wi-Fi signal strength is horrible.  Luckily the couple traveling with us had a cellphone that operated as a hotspot or we never would have gotten internet access since I decided for the first time ever to leave my broadband card at home.  Nothing I'm sure can't be fixed.

More later......I'm off to recoup some losses and then some shopping!

I'm in love

We're doing a little construction project here at Casa Buker (the first of many actually, but more about those later). It's just a little repair/rejuvination of my closet which I'm pretty excited about and I promise updates when we get further along.

We are lucky enough to have a fabulous handyman that does most everything that needs done around here. His name is Anthony and he has the cutest shadow E.V.E.R.

This guy. That's Samson and he never leaves Anthony's heels! And I'm in cocker spaniel love with him.

Maybe because he reminds me so much of this guy. Kacee was my first dog as an adult and he was absolutely the best, sweetest, most precious dog. Sorry Raf. I love you to pieces and wouldn't trade you for anything, but you're a much bigger challenge than Kacee ever was!

Anyway, I make a trip out every day to scratch Samson's ears.

That is if I can get him away from Anthony long enough.

Thank goodness he can't climb ladders or he'd probably be up there pounding in roofing nails (or whatever it is they do up there.)

Be still my heart!

It appears I've been hoarding magazines. It's not that I wasn't aware of this fact.....it's just that I wasn't sure what I was going to do about it. Actually, I hadn't really considered that I needed to do something about it.

Until this happened.

I'm blaming it on this issue of Gourmet magazine. It's the last one. Forevah. I know, right? I couldn't believe it either. But, it's true. November, 2009 is the LAST issue of my beloved Gourmet magazine.

According to some, Gourmet is too "highbrow" for our dumbed down food culture these days. Seems we've become a Hamburger Helper society and the writings and recipes of Gourmet are no longer relevant. Huh? Not in my kitchen.

I've been "collecting" (hoarding) cooking magazines for years. According to the stacks I assembled today, about 15 years. Which means I've moved said "collection" about five times through several states and a few continents. Scary.

Scary to some, but somehow really important to me. I have gone through spurts throughout the years when I've thrown issues away. I had probably watched one of those Oprah episodes about those really insane hoarder people that can't actually live in their houses anymore from all the junk and was afraid that's who I'd become with my cooking magazines. So I guess I decided to throw out some issues because I have very few entire years of any one magazine.

Although, I have every one of these. They just started publishing, so I'm committed to owning all of them.

I have no plans of entering a 12-step program.

Luckily I collected some of these. According to my scale I should consult them much more often.

And personally, I think "Fine Cooking" sounds much more highbrow than "Gourmet". I'm just sayin.

I love the thought of this magazine, mainly because I l.o.v.e. Italy and all things Italian, but I don't ever think I've cooked one recipe from La Cucina Italiana. I should definitely change that.

For some reason, I was most diligent about keeping copies of Food and Wine and Bon Apetit than all of the others. I have no explanation for that.

I consider Gourmet, Food and Wine, and Bon Appetit the "Big Three".

But to me, they're more like BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus than Ford, GM and Chrysler. Again.....just sayin.

Like I said, the oldest edition I have is a Food and Wine from 1995. The price, even back then, was $3.95. I'm sure I shouldn't have been spending that in 1995.

But take a gander at Mr. Fine Cooking and his $6.95 price tag. I guess since I have subscriptions, I haven't been paying attention. I am now. That's steeeeeeep.

So, I sorted all of these into months. Twelve stacks. Twelve large stacks.

Here's some of what I have for the month of November.

I have 29.....yes, twenty nine.....magazines for the month of November. If I was the least bit dedicated or committed that would be a recipe per day. (minus one....I get it) But, rest assured, I'm not near that ambitious.

But I have to do something with these suckers, so other than my previous commitments to Barefoot Bloggers and TWD, anything I make will come for the pages of one of these magazines

Every month for the next twelve months.

We're not even getting into this stack.

Or the cookbooks.

Nope, not talkin about those.

Tis (almost) that season....

It's time for me to start thinking about Christmas gifts. Our family is tough to buy for. If we find something we want, we all tend to just go get it for ourselves. No disappointments or returns warranted that way!

But I've started to see a few intriguing items in the past couple of weeks and felt compelled to share.....and just in case you were thinking of adding me to your Christmas list. Hint, hint!!

So, I came across this little gadget the other day in the new Martha Stewart Living magazine. It's called the Demy and here's the description...

Home cooks will relish the Demy, which stores up to 2,500 recipes. Here's how it works: Create a free account at keyingredient.com. Then assemble a collection of recipes, which you can load from that website, copy from other sites, or type in yourself. Plug the Demy into your PC or Mac to synchronize with your account Then set it on your counter for easy access. "I have recipes all over the place. For organization purposes, this is so convenient," says Living's food editorial director, Jennifer Aaronson. It even has a cooking timer and a conversion tool.

You also have the ability to adjust the font size, which for my blind-ass self is crucial. (If only my iPhone could do the same.)

So, I'm think of ordering this for some of my fellow cooking fanatics. Anyone out there have one? Pros and cons??

Check out all the specs at www.mydemy.com

Surgery and Soup!

Yesterday was a looooong day. What I thought would be about a six hour day of surgery slowly turned into thirteen hours when Mr. B's surgeon determined he needed to repair his knee along with his ankle/foot!

I'll try to start at the beginning but all of the details have become a little fuzzy. It seems Mr. B minorly (is that a word?) injured his ankle in his college pole vaulting days, which wasn't serious enough at the time to do anything about, but must have weakened it enough that over the years that it was more susceptible to strains and sprains. So about a year ago it was causing him enough pain that he decided that he needed to get it checked out.

A little side note....Birmingham, Alabama is home to the best Orthopaedic Center in the country....The Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. If you're a sports fan at all, you've probably heard of Dr. James Andrews. He's been called "the most valuable player in all sports". This dude has saved the careers of Roger Clemens, Troy Aikman, Charles Barkley, Derek Jeter, Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus, and most recently (unfortunately) Brett Favre.

ASMOC employs the top Orthopedic surgeons and we were fortunate enough to have one of the best foot and ankle specialists taking care of Mr. B., Dr. Angus McBryde. As I said, Mr. B had his first consultation with Dr. McBryde over a year ago. Doc said he needed to have surgery and to get it scheduled. Ummm. For various business reasons, it kept being put off. About three months ago, I forced the issue and he got it scheduled. Fast forward to Thursday night....the night before surgery. Doc calls the house and wants to talk to hubs. Says "It's been over a year since the last MRI, we need to do another before the surgery tomorrow to make sure nothing has changed." Hubs mentions that he's been having some major knee pain on the same leg so Doc says he'll MRI the knee while they're in there.

So they do and Doc says he's got a torn miniscus and "it's been a long time since he's done a knee, but should be no problem to take care of it." Ummmm. Hubs and I look at each other a little scared! Now, Doc is on the verge of retirement and has been around a while but it's sounding like he a knee rookie???? WTF? And to quote the nurses in the pre-op room, "Dr. McBryde is doing a knee? That's weird." Huh?

So Doc comes in for the pre-op consult and hubs says "So, the nurses think it's really weird that you're doing a knee (chuckle, chuckle)." Doc.."Really? Well, it's been a while. Don't really do them anymore, but I guess I've probably done over 10,000 knees in my time. Should be ok!" I'm like...Holla! 10,000 practice sessions should be fine!

Hubs made it through, but it was much more extensive that we originally thought...a couple incisions in the knee, some major ankle reconstruction....he had two dead tendons...and his two little toes now have pins in them. He's in a hard cast and not allowed to put any weight on the ankle for six weeks. It's tough to not use your leg at all for six weeks. Have I mentioned that Mr. B is 6'7" tall so maneuvering around on crutches is going to be interesting!

It's now been 24 hours and I have to say, he's being a real trooper. He's in major pain, so most of the time he's doped up and sleeping, but he also has to get up and move around every couple of hours to ward off blood clots. Needless to say, he can't function very well by himself. Going to be a real test of our 20 year marriage!!! You all know how men are when they're sick ;)

To make him feel a little better, I made him some of Tyler Florence's Ultimate Roasted Tomato Soup. Who doesn't want some tomato soup when they're feeling pitiful?

I upped the ante a little bit and made some of the topping from Barefoot Contessa's Pappa al Pomodoro....you know the stuff...croutons, bacon and basil.

This was delicious. Here's the recipe.

Roasted Tomato Soup
Recipe courtesy Tyler Florence

Ingredients:

2 1/2 pounds fresh tomatoes (mix of fresh heirlooms, cherry, vine and plum tomatoes)
6 cloves garlic, peeled
2 small yellow onions, sliced
Vine cherry tomatoes for garnish, optional
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 quart chicken stock
2 bay leaves
4 tablespoons butter (I only used 2 tbsp)
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves, optional
3/4 cup heavy cream, optional

Directions:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.

Wash, core and cut the tomatoes into halves. Spread the tomatoes, garlic cloves and onions onto a baking tray. If using vine cherry tomatoes for garnish, add them as well, leaving them whole and on the vine. Drizzle with 1/2 cup of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 to 30 minutes, or until caramelized.

Remove roasted tomatoes, garlic and onion from the oven and transfer to a large stock pot (set aside the roasted vine tomatoes for later). Add 3/4 of the chicken stock, bay leaves, and butter. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until liquid has reduced by a third.

Wash and dry basil leaves, if using, and add to the pot. Use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth. Return soup to low heat, add cream and adjust consistency with remaining chicken stock, if necessary. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Garnish in bowl with 3 or 4 roasted vine cherry tomatoes and a splash of heavy cream.

Pappa Al Pomidoro (topping)
2008, Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics, All Rights Reserved

For the topping:

3 cups (1-inch) diced ciabatta cubes
2 ounces thickly sliced pancetta, chopped
24 to 30 whole fresh basil leaves
3 tablespoons good olive oil, plus more for serving
Salt and pepper

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

For the topping, place the ciabatta cubes, pancetta, and basil on a sheet pan large enough to hold them in a single layer. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and toss well. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 25 minutes, until all the ingredients are crisp. The basil leaves will turn dark and crisp, which is perfectly fine. Reheat the soup, if necessary, beat with a wire whisk until the bread is broken up. Stir in the Parmesan and taste for seasoning. Serve hot sprinkled with the topping and drizzled with additional olive oil.

2. "Outstanding in the Field" Here's the description of this fabulous idea from their website:

"Outstanding in the Field is a roving culinary adventure - literally a restaurant without walls. Since 1999 we have set the long table at farms or gardens, on mountain tops or in sea caves, on islands or at ranches. Occasionally the table is set indoors: a beautiful refurbished barn, a cool greenhouse or a stately museum. Wherever the location, the consistent theme of each dinner is to honor the people whose good work brings nourishment to the table.

Ingredients for the meal are almost all local (sometimes sourced within inches of your seat at the table!) and generally prepared by a celebrated chef of the region. After a tour of the site, we all settle in: farmers, producers, culinary artisans, and diners sharing the long table."

I'm so excited that this will be making an appearance in Birmingham on Sept. 23 with Frank Stitt of Highland's Bar and Grill and Bottega serving as chef. I quickly snatched four tickets. Hopefully I can find some friends by then! Check out the website to see if they will be making an appearance in your town.

3. I'm really excited to start my photography class next week. A girlfriend and I will be attending every Tuesday for three hours for four weeks. Hopefully this means I'll be posting much better food pics in the near future. I'll be reporting back on all that I learn!

4. Time-waster of the week. I'm almost too embarrassed to put this in writing but I'm officially a farmer. Yes, you read that right. Farmer. Facebook farmer in Farmtown. And I'm obsessed. It's Donna's fault.

5. And finally, this Bachelorette "shocker". Seems, Ed, the guy who couldn't get it up on national television is a playa!! When will these girls ever learn!

Buzzards

Look at that face.  The steely determination in those eyes.  Well, that one eye.  The eyebrow on the right always hangs over so I can't see that right eye.  But that left eye tells you all you need to know.  Doesn't it just scream fierce?

Not exactly.  It may look fierce to the untrained, but in truth it screams "frustrated buzzard hunter".

We have buzzards outside our house.  Lots of them.  (My Audubon-esque husband tried to convince me they were hawks when we first moved here, but when twelve of them showed up one day, he had to admit he might have been wrong).

And because our house sits on top of a mountain (I use the term loosely.  It is Alabama) the buzzards fly at just the right height that Rafter can watch them....and think he can catch them.

On sunny days (can't figure out where they go on cloudy days??) they circle for hours.  Swooping down right in front of the windows just to torment him.

He runs from one end of the house to the other.  Watching.  Growling.  Barking.

Frustrated.
